Using Academic Words in Writing
Academic words are valuable for accurate collocations and word forms, not for making sentences complex. Learn common collocations and forms, use each word once in an argument, and prefer simpler words when unsure.
Check three things
Collocation: make a decision, not do a decision.
Word form: affect is a verb; effect is a noun.
Register: avoid furthermore/nevertheless in casual speech.
Writing practice
Write one opinion-reason-example sentence per word.
Record misused words and prioritize them next review.
FAQ
Do harder words raise the score?
No; accuracy and variety matter more than rarity.
How do I learn collocations?
